Q. What are some of the recent projects that you've been working on?

A. The recent project I’ve been working on has pretty much just been "The Playboy Club." That has been taking up the majority of my year of 2011, and I have been thrilled about that, actually.

Q. What can you tell us about the premise for The Playboy Club and about your character?

A. "The Playboy Club" is a one-hour episodic drama and 20th Century Fox is producing it for NBC to air on Monday nights starting September 19th at 10:00 PM, and hopefully every Monday night after that for a long, long time to come.

We have a really wonderful cast and a great team of writers. We are shooting here in Chicago right now, and "The Playboy Club" takes place in Chicago, and it’s in the early 60s, I believe 1961, and right after the club has really taken off. It was opened in the late 50s and by 1961 it was pretty much the place to be, not just in Chicago, but pretty much known all over the country and everyone wanted to get in the doors, become a member, and see what all the fuss was about. It’s a really exciting premise for all of us, basically because we get to recreate a very interesting time period in American history, the 50s, and the 60s were beginning, but it takes place right sort of on the cusp of that, so there is a lot of transition from people’s sense of morality to the actual changing of the times and society itself, and it’s fun. It’s really fun to do any kind of a period piece. For me it’s always been one of my favorite things to do to recreate another time period. That stems all the way back from my time growing up on stage in the theater, and I’ve always loved doing that so I am thrilled with the idea of being able to do that today.

My character is the character of Max, the bartender. He is a young bartender at the Playboy Club, and he loves his job, but even more than that he loves his girlfriend who happens to be one of the bunnies in the club, Bunny Janie, played by the wonderful and talented Jenna Dewan-Tatum.

Q. Where do you draw from for your portrayal of Max?

A. I think basically when I think back about this time period it reminds me of my father talking to me about what it was like growing up when he was younger. The age of my character at this time is not unlike that of my father, so when I think about the conservative nature of the 50s and then the sort of transitional changing tumultuous times of the 60s and how my father went through that, I sort of drew a lot from my memories of his understanding that he taught me growing up of what life was like then from a traditional value stand point, from a morality standpoint, and from a conservative standpoint. I like that because it puts Max in a position where he has to be coming from that place, yet he has this amazing job in this hot club and his girlfriend is getting hit on by men every night when he goes to work, and it’s not the kind of thing that most guys at that time would ever have to put up with. It’s a very unique experience for him to have to reconcile his own reservations about how he feels about all of that. He wants to be a part of the times, he wants to be progressive and he wants to evolve and be hip, but at the same time he is sort of stuck between two worlds; the new world that is obviously changing around him, and he’s young enough to realize that, and also the old world that he has been so used to in terms of the way men and women and relationships work from a 1950s standpoint.

Q. Is that what you find challenging about the role?

A. Absolutely. Yeah, absolutely. Trying to reconcile those two things, I think that’s what makes the character’s journey an interesting story to tell and certainly exciting for me to be a part of, absolutely.

Q. Did the chemistry with the cast come naturally or did it take some time to develop?

A. Jenna and I hit it off right off the bat to begin with. That’s an important thing, I think any time you’re doing something where two people have to work closely with each other, we are great friends and I felt that way, I think she and I discussed how we all sort of felt that way in the cast. Jenna and I have to play a couple on the show and so our characters know each other really well but at the same time, when you get an ensemble cast together, you always hope everyone is going to gel and become a real family. I think that really happened on this project and it’s a testament to all of the amazing artists that have been brought together to participate in telling these stories. Wonderful, wonderful actors, and great people, so I am very thrilled to be a part of it and to have crossed paths and be able to meet and work with all of them as well.

Q. Do you have a really memorable moment from filming the show?

A. think it’s two moments, it’s when we were filming the pilot here in Chicago and the first time that I actually walked onto the set of the club which, at the time, was built out in an old airfield by the lake. That was an overwhelming emotional experience for me. Then, the same thing happened on an even larger scale when we got picked up, the series, and we all started shooting here several weeks back. They rebuilt the club but they built an even bigger, better version of it for the series, and when I went into the sound stage and first saw the club it literally took my breath away. I stood there with my mouth open, looking at it, I couldn’t even believe it. I have never in my life seen such a beautiful, remarkable, just gorgeous set, I mean of that scale and that magnitude, and you immediately felt like you were going back in history, like you felt like you were in another time period, just stepping onto the step and walking around and looking at everything. I thought this was going to be a hell of a ride. I have never forgotten that feeling and it still is, yeah, it still is, absolutely.

Q. What do you think it is about the show that will draw viewers in?

A. First of all because it’s a great story, but part of the reason it’s a great story is that they have, Chad Hodge, the writer was wise enough to realize that the time period, setting a show around a club like that, there was so much amazing music from that era and in the original Playboy Club, musicians from that time use to come in and they would perform on the stage for everyone. They were able to incorporate that into it, so it’s a real amazing mixture of night life and music from the times. You’ve got a lot of these sort of movers and shakers, you ‘ve got politicians rubbing shoulders with mobsters, a lot of corruption in Chicago back then; and you’ve got all these celebrities that want to be in there and want to be seen, you’ve got these beautiful girls everywhere, and I think that there’s a sort of sexy mystery to the show. It looks gorgeous and I think that because of that, because it’s going to be so fun and it’s going to have such a sort of energetic atmosphere, that I think it is going to captivate audiences. I think people are going to fall in love with the show.

Q. You're a part of the social networking site Twitter, why is it important for you to connect with fans this way?

A. I think anyone that sort of tried to stay with the modern times of today acknowledges that social media is sort of changing the world as we know it. You know, the same way with Apple Computers, the same way the iPad changed the way we think about computers, the iPhone changed the way we think about telephones, and the iPod changed the way we think about listening to music. Technology is changing so fast right now that things like Facebook and Twitter are absolutely essential, I think, for anyone that is interested in sort of spreading the word about something that they are passionate about or from a marketing standpoint, just letting people know what’s going on. In the entertainment industry that’s an invaluable tool to have. We try to use it the best we can to keep people up on what’s going on because we realize how many people are so heavily involved and what’s happening on things like Facebook and Twitter and what not.

Q. What would you like to say to your fans and supporters?

A. Thank you. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I hope this is just the beginning and there will be lots more to come
